A business telephone system typically consists of a personal computer network and the associated wiring loom. The computer networks may consist of one or more local area networks (LANs), remote area networks (RAS), or a virtual private branch exchange (VPE). Typically, there is an interchange of data and voice messages between the internal switch and the other connected office systems. In some case, a third party company serves as a connection tool between the internal switch and the different outside networks.

The advantage of having a hosted business telephone systems is that users are provided a common network that can be used in place of traditional LANs and RASs.
