A business telephone system, also known as a corporate network, is a multi-line telephone network typically used in industrial, office, and government settings. Unlike the landline phone system, which is used for local or personal calls, corporate networks are wider and contain lines for both internal and external call traffic. Corporate phone systems allow multiple users to connect via the Internet or other communication networks, with the capability of expanding the network with additional lines or extensions.



The advantages of a business telephone system include: reduced costs, better routing, greater flexibility and convenience, easier monitoring, and a better return on investment (ROI). Reduced costs include: increased efficiency in dispatch of work orders, elimination of missed calls and messages, increased productivity, and fewer dropped calls. Enhanced routing means calls can be made directly to the extensions where they are needed, reducing the need for the front office to order calls for the extensions. Convenience refers to easier handling of callers because the information on the caller id is displayed clearly, rather than being passed on down the line as with some landlines. Greater flexibility means that callers can take their time when calling, choosing their options as they see fit, without having to wait on hold with a representative.

VoIP is an example of this technology, replacing the traditional data packets used for voice transmissions with data packets carrying information instead of voice. There are two types of VoIP systems: traditional internet protocol business telephone system (IpS) and hybrid systems. Both use the internet protocol to transmit voice traffic over the same network as data. Traditional business telephone systems use the IP protocol to transmit calls over the public switched telephone network (PSTN). This provides both voice and data transmissions, making it useful for remote workers. However, it does not provide any security or privacy for those who call into the system. Security concerns have led many businesses to move toward a VoIP solution that uses a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) phone system that is managed by the PBX company.



A hybrid business telephone system (IpS) uses the internet protocol to transmit calls as data over the PSTN but uses dedicated inbound or outbound numbers, which cannot be affected by other calls. The advantage of this is that there are no security or privacy issues involved for inbound calls. The disadvantage is that calls placed onto the system cannot be traced back to their originating point. Incoming calls cannot be forwarded to other lines, and the overhead cost of PBX phone systems can become high. Also, the availability of free VoIP services has made some businesses change to IP based phone systems. Modern business telephone systems are very flexible and provide ease of use to business people. Most companies do not require the use of any special equipment to set up an internet protocol-based call system.
